The M4 rifle is the carbine variant of the larger M16 series of rifles, first adopted by the US Army in the mid 1960s. The rifle is now the standard issue rifle of the US Army and fires the slim, lightweight 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. It has a number of modern features including a telescopic stock and an integrated rail system for the mounting of optics (M150 4x optic, or the M68 Close Combat Optic) and grips. Its light weight and high cyclic rate make it a very handy weapon in various combat environments.
~ In-game description

The M4 is a carbine featured in Squad.

Gameplay

  • The M4 magazine holds 30 rounds.
  • Can be fired on burst and semi-automatic.
  • The sights for the M4 are the flip-up iron sight, carrying handle iron sight, M68 red dot sight, and M150 (4×) optical sight.
    • The flip-up and carry handle iron sight allows the user to zero the rifle for different ranges (from 100m to 600m).
    • The M68 red dot sight provides a clear sight picture in the center and peripheral vision, but it doesn't allow zeroing, limiting the long-range effectiveness.
      • US Army M4s mountes M68 on its Picatinny rails, while Irregular Militia M4s mounts M68 on its carrying handle, causing higher bore-to-sight distance.
    • The M150 optic allows the user to see enemies from long distances easily and engage enemies at longer ranges without the need to zero the weapon.
  • M4 is a well-balanced weapon with adequate damage, effective range, and bullet dispersion performance.
  • M4 shares its damage model and ballistic performance with M4A1, M16A2 and M16A4.
    • The 833 rounds per minute rate of fire sits above average for most automatic weapons. It can output serious firepower in close-quarter combat. However, the fire mode is limited to burst-fire and semi-automatic only.
  • M4 is classified in-game as the Carbine. Short rifles and Carbines are well-balanced in handling.
    • They output regular suppression effects, are relatively easy to point fire, and are effective at all ranges.
  • The Foregrip attachment is cosmetic and does not improve the gun handling as of Version 6.0.

History

The M4 Carbine is a gas-operated, rotating bolt carbine. The M4 Carbine was adopted by the US Army as the standard service assault rifle and carbine in 1994, replacing the M16 series assault rifles. Like all carbines, the M4 is compact in size and smaller than an average assault rifle, so it is easier to handle and carry. The weapon overall is intended for short to medium-range engagements out to 200 or even 300m.

Trivia

  • In Squad, the attachments found on the M4 with the SOPMOD package include the TD Foregrip, M203, M68 CCO, M150 RCO, and AN/PEQ-15 Laser Sight. These attachments are purely cosmetic and don't serve any gameplay function.
  • Before Version 4.5, M4 variants with plastic handguards and carrying handles were part of the Irregular Militia kit. Most kits were replaced by the M16A2.
