The NSV Machine Gun is a heavy machine gun (HMG) available in Squad.

General Information[ | ]

The NSV Machine Gun is a Russian gas-operated HMG. The NSV was designed by Russian designers G. I. Nikitin, Y. S. Sokolov, and V. I. Volkov in 1960 to replace the outdated SGM and DShK HMG as the standard HMG of the Soviet Army. The NSV lost against the PK HMG, which was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, who was also the inventor of the infamous AK-47, AKM, and the RPK, mainly due to it being more expensive and not productive enough. The NSV was improved over the following years and the Soviet Army later found interest in the NSV again. It was adopted by the Soviet Army in 1971, replacing the DShK HMG, and remained in service until 1991. When the Soviet Army dissolved in 1991, the Russian Ground Forces (RGF) adopted the NSV as its standard HMG. However, the manufacturing license of the NSV ended up in the hands of Kazakhstan, ending production of NSV HMGs in the Russian Federation, thus forcing the RGF to adopt a new and more accurate HMG, the Kord, in 1998. The NSV HMG was exported to numerous countries in Europe and Asia, mainly ones that were connected to the Soviet Union.

The NSV's design incorporates a glass-filled polyamide buttstock, iron sights, long stroke gas piston, and a 1.1m (43.3 in.) barrel. The NSV is designed to be light so strong infantrymen can carry the weapon without any assistance. The NSV is belt-fed with each belt holding normally 50 rounds, but holds 100 rounds in-game. The NSV uses the Russian 12.7x108mm cartridge. The NSVT is a variant of the weapon designed for vehicle use, with "T" meaning "танк" or tank, denoting its use on vehicles.

Variants[ | ]

  • The NSV is available to the Russian Ground Forces, Russian Airborne Forces, Irregular Militia and MEA. Gameplay-wise, it is a counterpart to the M2A1 used by the NATO factions.
  • The NSV is an emplacement for the Russian Ground Forces, Russian Airborne Forces and Middle Eastern Alliance as either a tripod or protected under a bunker.
    • Two of each type can be placed per FOB for a cost of 200 and 400 construction points, respectively.
  • Several vehicles in Squad are armed with the NSV.
    • The MT-LB VMK and MT-LB NSVT variants come equipped with the NSVT as their primary weapon.
    • T-72 tanks also have the NSVT for the vehicle commander, alongside the MEA T-62. The tank-mounted NSVTs can be reloaded to have an extra round in the chamber. The "T" stands for "танк" or tank, denoting the variant's use on vehicles.
  • An NSV ammunition belt can hold 100 rounds. For the vehicle-mounted NSVs, the MT-LB VMK and MT-LB NSVT APCs both have 5 ammo boxes for a total of 500 rounds (100 per box), whereas the T-72 commander has 2 boxes for a total of 300 rounds (150 per box).

Gameplay[ | ]

  • Can be fired only on automatic.
  • A NSV ammunition belt can hold 100 rounds as emplacements.
    • Tank commander NSV of the T-72 tanks has 150 round-belt for its box magazine.
  • All variants of the NSV include an optic with two levels of zoom, unlike the M2A1, which only has a static zoom ACOG scope.
    • The NSV scope does not have range markings. It does, however, come with an integrated analog rangefinder. The reticle is similar in appearance to the PSO-1 scope found on the SVD sniper rifle.
  • The NSV emplacement comes with a low-profile tripod, which could be protected behind one layer of sandbags.
    • The tripod allows NSV to pivot thirty-eight degrees left and right from where it was placed. It has a five-degrees of depression and five degrees of elevation.
  • The effective range of the NSV is 1.8 kilometers.
  • The firepower of this 12.7x108mm machine gun should not be underestimated, as those bullets penetrate all current in-game armored vehicles and dispose groups of enemy personnel with relative ease.
    • 12.7x108mm can penetrate every in-game vehicle except M2A3 and main battle tanks.
    • It can also penetrate thinner walls, meaning that you can neutralize shielded or covered enemy infantry.
    • It can also penetrate the bulletproof windshields of other light vehicles, killing infantry inside directly.
  • Armour calculation involves many factors that are not limited to simple base damage and penetration. The slope of the armor, its thickness, the angle of hit, all of that matter when the game engine decides if damage has been dealt to the target.
    • Prioritizing areas such as flat armor angles, turret, and rear areas, which are less effective against the 12.7x108mm.
  • Firing in short bursts is extremely effective in long-range engagements.
  • Like all heavy machine guns, it features a long reload time. Conservation of ammunition will prove helpful to last through your ammunition belt instead of burning through it so that you do not have to reload at the wrong time.
  • NSV and Kord share the same damage model, penetration, and ballistic performance.
    • They have the second highest based damage for heavy machine guns, at 162; this is only weaker than the vehicle-exclusive KPVT machine guns.
    • Their fire rate of 700 RPM is higher than that of the M2A1 (500 RPM) and DShK-M (600 RPM), allowing the gunner to more liberally spray targets. However, the machine gun will overheat with sustained fire.
    • They have slower muzzle velocities at 860 m/s, whereas M2A1 is 890 m/s.

Trivia[ | ]

  • The abbreviation NSV is the first letters of the NSV's designers' last names: G. I. Nikitin, Y. S. Sokolov, and V. I. Volkov. The NSV in Russian is "HCB/Никитина-Соколова-Волкова".
