The AK-74 is a gas-operated and rotating bolt assault rifle that succeeded the AKM family of rifles for the Soviet Armed Forces in the 1970s. It is a popular, reliable arm for many former Soviet nations and militia groups. The 5.45×39mm cartridge it fires is smaller, slimmer and fired at a higher velocity compared to the older 7.62×39mm cartridge. The unique muzzle brake combined with the lighter cartridge makes for an extremely controllable weapon even on fully automatic fire.

Gameplay

  • The AK-74 magazine holds 30 rounds.
  • Can be fired on automatic and semi-automatic.
  • The 652 rounds per minute rate of fire is below average for an assault rifle but makes the gun more controllable in close and medium range.
  • The sights for the AK-74 include iron sights, 1P63 collimator sight.
    • The iron sight allows the user to zero the rifle for different ranges (from 100-800m).
    • The 1P63 collimator sight allows a serviceable sight picture for close-range combat, but it doesn't allow zeroing, limiting long-range effectiveness.
  • Arguably one of the weaker assault rifles in-game, AK74 and its variants have slightly less damage at 60 and an overall much shorter effective range, as well as a below-average bullet dispersion performance at 4 MOA.
  • AK-74 shares its damage and ballistic performance with AK-12, AKS-74 and AK-74M.
  • AK-74 is classified in-game as Short Rifle. Short rifles and Carbines are well-balanced in handling.
    • They output regular suppression effects, are relatively easy to point fire, and are effective at all ranges.

History

The AK-74 is a gas-operated and rotated belt assault rifle. It was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1974 to replace the outdated AKM of the Soviet Army. The AK-74 is known for using the newer, smaller, and deadly 5.45x39mm cartridges instead of the 7.62x39mm cartridges of previous Kalashnikov rifles. The AK-74 is compatible with various attachments, such as GP-25 grenade launcher, collimator, and optic sights.

Trivia

  • The abbreviation AK from AK-74 stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova (Автомат Калашникова), which means in English from Russian, "Kalashnikov automatic rifle". 74 stands for the year the AK-74 was designed, which was 1974.
