The AKM is a gas-operated and rotating bolt assault rifle that was developed and produced from 1949 as the main Soviet arm throughout the Cold War. Its reliability, ease of use and low unit cost has made it an extremely popular small arm around the world, particularly with unconventional and insurgent forces, and has spawned a wide variety of variants. The 7.62x39mm cartridge combined with automatic fire gives this weapon great stopping power at close range, however its accuracy does not fair as well at loner ranges.

Gameplay

  • The AKM magazine holds 30 rounds.
  • Can be fired on automatic and semi-automatic.
  • The sights for the AKM include iron sights only.
    • The iron sight allows the user to zero the rifle for different ranges (from 100-800m).
  • The AKM and AKMS have the same damage model and ballistic performance.
    • The 599 rounds per minute rate of fire is on the lowest end for an automatic weapon.
    • It also shares its damage model with RPD but with a much lower fire rate at 599 RPM and a slightly higher accuracy at 4 MOA.
    • Compared to other small caliber rifles, 7.62×39mm rifles have higher close-range damage but a shorter effective range.
  • AKM is classified in-game as Short Rifle. Short rifles and Carbines are well-balanced in handling.
    • Compared to smaller caliber Short Rifles, 7.62×39mm rifles have slightly more moving sway and ADS sway, and marginally higher randomized hip fire recoil. But their overall point firing responsiveness and ADS recoil are the same.
    • They also output more suppression effects akin to Light Machine Guns.

History

The AKM is a long-stroke piston operated, rotating bolt assault rifle. It was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1957 to create a modernized version of his first successful rifle, the AK-47. The AKM has a laminated wooden buttstock like many other Soviet-era AK rifles, a slant-cut muzzle brake, finger swells on the handguard a modified trigger assembly, iron sights, and gas block. In comparison to its predecessor, the AKM weighs less, is easier to manufacture than the AK-47, and uses the same 7.62x39mm cartridges.

Trivia

  • AKM stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy (Автомат Калашникова Модернизированный) which means in English from Russian, "Kalashnikov modernized automatic rifle."
