General Information[ | ]

The M-ATV is a 5 crew, 4-wheel mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) all terrain vehicle (ATV). The vehicle was designed and built in 2009, and adopted by the US Army in the same year as the standard light MRAP.

The vehicle weighs 16.25 tons (14.74 tonnes), is 20.57 ft (6.27 m) long, 8.17 ft (2.49 m) wide and 8.75 ft (2.67 m) tall. Its armor is Plasan Composite and it has a V-shaped hull to offer protection from IED attacks whilst a central tire inflation system and run-flat insets that allow the vehicle to travel at least 30 miles at 30 mph even if two tires lose pressure. The vehicle can be equipped with a large variety of weaponry including an M240 Machine Gun, Mk 19 grenade launcher, BGM-71 TOW, and the MILAN ATGM. The engine is a 7.2 liter inline-6 Caterpillar C7 turbo-diesel, producing 370 brake horsepower. It has a maximum payload capacity of 4,000 pounds and go 510 km on a single tank of gas. The M-ATV can reach a top speed of 105 kmph (65.24 mph).

Gameplay and Variants[ | ]

The M-ATV comes in five variants distinguished by turret style and armament, and operated by the US Army and United States Marine Corps. All variants of the M-ATV are lightly armored and can withstand almost all small arms fire, but any weapon system heavier than that will make short work of it. The initial two variants from the A9.4 Update carry the powerful M2A1 heavy machine gun, which is capable of moderate penetration of certain cover and can quickly destroy other lightly armored targets. The two M240B variants, introduced in the A13 Update, are more suited for anti-infantry ops.

M-ATV M2HB[ | ]

The M2HB variant is armed with an open-top .50 caliber M2A1 heavy machine gun. Unlike the .50 caliber machine gun emplacement that can be built at FOBs, this one uses iron sights, which makes it more difficult to engage targets at range. The gunner is exposed to enemy fire, but also tends to maintain better awareness of what is happening directly around him.

M-ATV M240B[ | ]

The M240B variant sports the smaller M240B anti-infantry machine gun, but also carries a larger supply of ammunition. This variant gives up the ability to damage armored vehicles—it can still seriously damage or destroy Technicals, Transport Tucks and, Logistics Trucks, but its primary purpose is anti-infantry.

M-ATV M2HB CROWS[ | ]

The M-ATV CROWS variant sports the unique CROWS remote operated turret with the .50 caliber M2A1 heavy machine gun. The turret offers the gunner far greater ability to zoom in and acquire a target, and keeps the gunner protected inside the vehicle. The gun has 400 rounds and its ammo can only be replenished at repair stations. The A11 update overhauled the CROWS with an ammunition tracker, rangefinder, turret orientation indicator, and 3 levels of zoom.

M-ATV M240B CROWS[ | ]

The M240B CROWS variant sports the smaller M240B anti-infantry machine gun, but also carries a larger supply of ammunition. This variant gives up the ability to damage armored vehicles—it can still seriously damage or destroy Technicals, Transport Tucks and, Logistics Trucks, but its primary purpose is anti-infantry.

M-ATV TOW[ | ]

The M-ATV TOW variant carries a BGM-71 TOW anti-tank guided missile launcher in place of a machine gun. Gameplay wise, it is essentially the same as the TOW emplacement that can be built at FOBs except mounted on a mobile platform. The vehicle carries a total of 6 missiles, which have the same range and damage as a standard TOW. Considering that the only other mobile ATGM platform the US possesses is the M2A3 (which carries only two missiles), the M-ATV TOW is a relatively cheap and simple way for the US to deploy ATGM stopping power at low ticket cost. It is the US Army equivalent of the BRDM-2 Spandrel of the Russian Ground Forces.

Trivia[ | ]

  • CROWS stand for "Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station".
  • During the 9.12 patch, the M-ATV replaced the Humvee in-game as a result of licensing issues with the original manufacturer of the Humvee, AM General.
